Reclaim Your Focus: The Missing Link Between Energy and Performance

By Ellen Duffy-Lueb

In today’s fast-paced, always-on world, many high-performing women feel like there is never enough time. Days are filled with meetings, messages, and constant demands – leaving little room for the kind of work that truly drives meaningful results.

In response, the focus often shifts to better time management.
How to be more efficient.
How to get more done in less time.

More recently, there has also been growing recognition of the importance of managing energy – understanding that we cannot operate at full capacity all day, every day.

And while both are essential, many high performers still find themselves busy, stretched, and not making the impact they know they are capable of.

Because something is missing.

Focus.

Not as a standalone skill, but as the result of how intentionally you manage your time and energy together.

Why Energy Management Comes First

Before you can reclaim focus, you must understand your energy.

Energy management is not a trendy concept or a soft skill – it is a practical foundation for sustainable high performance. It involves knowing:

  • When your energy is at its peak
  • When you need to rest and recover
  • How to allocate your effort to the tasks that matter most

Without this self-awareness, your attention becomes scattered. You may still “get things done,” but the quality of your work, the clarity of your thinking, and your ability to make strategic decisions suffer.

For high performers, the stakes are even higher: overextending without replenishment not only reduces effectiveness but can also lead to burnout. Protecting your energy is the first step in reclaiming control over where your focus goes.

The Missing Link: Focus as the Culmination of Energy and Time

Focus is the point where energy and time intersect. You can have hours on the calendar, but if your energy is low, those hours are not productive. Conversely, even when you feel energized, constant interruptions or competing priorities scatter your attention.

Focus allows you to:

  • Engage deeply with high-value work
  • Make better decisions faster
  • Solve complex problems with clarity
  • Increase the impact of every action

In other words, focus is the tangible outcome of managing both your energy and your time intentionally. It is what turns effort into results.

The Cost of Lost Focus

Modern work environments rarely support sustained attention. Meetings, notifications, and ever-growing expectations pull us in multiple directions at once.

The consequences go beyond personal productivity:

  • Leaders without focus may miss critical signals from their team, leaving employees unsupported.
  • Teams lose alignment when their manager is overwhelmed, which can trigger a domino effect of stress and reduced performance.
  • High performers risk wasting energy on reactive work rather than proactive, strategic initiatives.

When focus is absent, even high-capacity leaders can struggle to maintain impact — highlighting why attention is truly the missing link.

How to Reclaim Your Focus

Reclaiming focus requires deliberate choices in both energy and time management. Practical strategies include:

1. Map Your Energy
Track when you are most alert and effective. Schedule demanding tasks during these peak periods, and reserve lower-energy times for routine or administrative work.

2. Protect Deep Work Blocks
Create uninterrupted periods for high-value work. Treat them as unmovable appointments with yourself.

3. Limit Context Switching
Group similar tasks together to reduce the cognitive cost of shifting attention. Notifications, open tabs, and task-hopping all erode focus.

4. Set Clear Boundaries
Strategic unavailability is not selfish; it is essential for producing work with impact. Communicate availability windows and honor them.

5. Align Energy and Intention
Regularly assess whether the work you’re doing matches your goals and where your energy is best spent. Being busy is not the same as being effective.

From Busy to Impactful

Reclaiming focus transforms how you work. It moves you from simply being busy to being impactful. It allows high-performing women to make better decisions, elevate their work, and achieve sustainable results — all without sacrificing well-being.

Focus is not just a nice-to-have skill.
It is the missing link between energy management and performance.

By understanding where your energy goes and intentionally directing your attention, you reclaim control over both your work and your impact.

If you are ready to take a more intentional approach to how you manage your energy, time, and attention, I am here to support you.

Intentional action builds success. Sustainable energy keeps it.
