Megi Angelova – Music Is What Feelings Sound Like!

By Fati Gorezi

Born in Bulgaria, Megi Angelova is a singer and songwriter based in London, UK. Coming from a background of musicians and artists she has always been fascinated by art and music which inspires her to look beyond the ‘usual’ and to experiment with different styles of music, vocals, lyrics, musical instruments and sound effects. Currently she is studying ‘Music Performance and Recording’ at the ‘University of West London’ and at the same time she is working on her first epic music album, which will be officially published at the end of 2018.

How did you get started with playing – and creating – music?

Coming from a background of musicians and artists I have always been fascinated by art and music from a very early age. As a kid I used to attend classical piano and solfeggio classes and I also loved to sing. Over the years I played and sang just for fun and mostly with friends, but my biggest dream was one day to become a professional recording artist. My actual music career started in 2014 when, after many years of struggle as a single mum, lots of challenges, and life-changing circumstances and personal growth, I wrote my first song, “Soul and Heart” which has a powerful message that I am personally sharing as part of my own inner transformation.

In the last four years I have performed at small concerts, art exhibitions and charity events. I have also recorded and published a few more songs with Bulgarian lyrics – “Spark” in 2015, “Fulfilment” (432Hz) in 2016, and “Dream” in 2017.

How would you describe your current sound?

The way that I express myself is through singing and music that is changing over time. My current sound is more Epic\Symphonic.

A lot of people see only the success that you have achieved. How many times have you had to fail before this?

What we see in someone else’s success is only the result of long-term hard work, knowledge and experience. I call this process, “The Path of the Warrior”. I had a lot of challenges on the way and a lot of ups and downs.  I was a single mum for many years, fighting for survival, to provide for my daughter and to build a better future for both of us. It was hard at the time but I never gave up on my dreams knowing that she is watching me closely and I am her biggest influence.

No matter how tough the risks and the hard times are, step-by-step I am constantly learning and expanding my awareness, getting stronger and stronger every day, with the unwavering intent to give my best in everything I put my heart into. This attitude has helped me to rise again each time and move forward.

What do you find most inspires you to write a song?

My songs are reflection of my inner world. Each song is born from personal experience and inner transformations. They are the manifestation of my creative essence and the voice of my soul and heart.

I’m interested in your musical roots. Which musicians and songwriters have been the greatest influence on you? What are your favourite albums?

I remember when I was little girl I heard ‘’Nights In White Satin’’ on the radio – ‘’Yes I Love You’’ – and that song unlocked my sensitivity to the open sound of music.

The genres of music that have influenced me the most are ‘New Age’, ‘Classical’, ‘Celtic’, ‘Rock’ and ‘Ambient’ music. Some of my favourite artists and composers are Enigma, Era, Karunesh, Oliver Shanti, Hans Zimmer, Enya, Lex Van Someren, Kitaro, Leona Lewis and Amy Lee.

What are your plans and hopes for the future with regard to your music?

Currently I am studying ‘Music Performance and Recording’ at the ‘University of West London’. My aim is to improve my skills as a musician, vocalist and music composer. At the same time I am working on my first epic vocals and music album, which will be officially published at the end of 2018.

What are the steps that you would encourage women to take to empower themselves?

Women are magnificent creative creatures. I would encourage them to be authentic and to trust their intuition. Our life is a process of awareness! Free yourself from limited beliefs and express your true essence in the most beautiful way.
