From Setback to Strength with Chisom Flourish
In this powerful conversation, Chisom shares how she transformed the challenges of immigration into a foundation for growth, resilience, and success. From navigating cultural differences and rebuilding confidence in a new country to advancing her education and career in housing, property, and community leadership, her journey is rooted in faith, discipline, and mindset.
Through persistence, continuous learning, and a refusal to be limited by circumstance, she turned setbacks into opportunities and built a life driven by purpose and service. Her story is a reminder that while we may not control where we start, we always have the power to decide how we build—and how far we go.
“You may not control where you start, but you always control how you build.”
You have rebuilt your life as an immigrant. What helped you turn challenges into opportunities?
Speaking at the Global Woman Summit in February, I shared how I turned what initially felt like setbacks—my accent, different education system, and cultural differences—into opportunities for growth.
I built my confidence through continuous exposure to unfamiliar situations. I applied for roles even when I had no local references, learned new systems, and actively engaged with people I met. I did not wait to feel ready; I acted and adapted as I grew.
I also developed the boldness to reach out to people, knowing rejection was possible, but refusing to be stopped by it. I had no network at the beginning, but I stayed consistent—asking questions, following up, and showing up. Over time, I became highly valued in every role I took on because of my commitment to continuous learning and excellence.
I later completed a Master’s in Strategic Business Information Technology and am currently beginning a PhD in Security and Strategic Studies.
A key part of my journey was intentionally protecting my mindset. I refused to give in to isolation, rejection, or comparison. My mindset has been my anchor—it keeps me moving forward instead of getting stuck.
My guiding motto is: “I may not control where I begin, but I can decide how I build.”
This belief is rooted in faith and the understanding that while we do not choose our background or circumstances, we do have full control over our response, choices, and growth.
How did you develop a builder’s mindset in difficult environments?
I learned to focus only on what I can control—my effort, attitude, and daily decisions.
Instead of dwelling on external limitations, I concentrate on growth, improvement, and contribution. Whether facing challenges or working toward goals, I maintain a builder’s mindset—looking for ways to create value, solve problems, and grow from nothing into something meaningful.
I also take initiative and responsibility wherever I am, always asking how I can add value and support others.
Tell us about the community work you’ve done.
The community work I have led, including Families & Community Together, comes from a deep giving mindset and belief in unity and shared growth.
Having worked for 15 years in housing—support services, sheltered housing, homelessness, and specialist housing—as well as in my property business, I have seen real needs and real challenges firsthand.
This experience keeps me grounded and shapes how I lead and make decisions. It allows me to bring both structure and empathy into everything I do.
Through community events, I aim to create spaces where people feel heard, supported, and empowered. These initiatives reflect my belief that everyone has a role to play—whether through volunteering, mentorship, or simply showing up for others.
“Setbacks don’t define you—they shape the mindset you use to rise.”

What is the main message you share through your work and public speaking?
My core message is simple:
Build with God, grow with integrity, and use success to serve others—not yourself.
I also emphasise:
- Consistency
- Discipline
- Wise financial stewardship
- Strong character
I believe how you build matters more than how fast you grow, and that character is the real currency of life.
Importantly, I believe faith and success are not separate. One can build, grow, and prosper without compromising values—in fact, my faith strengthens how I succeed.
How do you connect authentically with different audiences?
I focus less on performance and more on understanding people.
Before any talk or event, I think about who is in the room—their challenges, goals, and realities. I speak directly to that with honesty and authenticity, without masks or performance.
My goal is always connection, not perfection.
How do you balance running a property business, consulting, and community impact?
It comes down to clarity and systems.
I am very clear on my priorities and where I add the most value. I have built strong systems and surrounded myself with the right people so I am not doing everything alone.
This allows me to focus on strategy, relationships, my family, and meaningful impact across business and community work.
What is one key lesson from property that applies to leadership?
One of the biggest lessons is understanding fundamentals before chasing growth.
In property, if the numbers do not work, the deal does not work—no matter how appealing it looks.
The same applies to leadership: you need strong foundations, clear goals, and disciplined decision-making before you can scale anything successfully.
How do you help people build resilience and recover from setbacks?
I help people reframe setbacks as feedback and learning opportunities.
Real change begins with mindset. Until there is a mindset shift, external change is difficult.
I also emphasise perspective—one setback does not define a person or their entire journey.
Resilience is built through consistent small steps forward, even in difficult seasons.
What advice would you give someone who feels stuck in life?
Start exactly where you are.
When I first came to the UK, I chose not to see myself as disadvantaged, but as someone in a place of opportunity.
I refused to be defined by background, opinions, or circumstances. Instead, I focused on growth—learning new skills, improving myself, connecting with others, and maintaining a positive mindset.
My advice is simple: start small, stay consistent, and believe in your ability to grow. If life gives you lemons, turn them into lemonade.
