Since before 2010, I often sought peace after work by visiting Mogok Monastery. Whether through practicing meditation or offering dana, these visits became moments of reflection and solace. During one such visit, I stumbled upon a small leaflet featuring illustrations of the “Patissathamupada Dependent Origination” printed in English. Without much thought, I placed it on my fridge, where it quietly lingered for years, unnoticed.
One day, amidst the overwhelm of long-term illness and personal hardships, my eyes landed on the leaflet once more. It was then that I noticed a small red arrow at the base of the life cycle diagram, pointing to the word “Nibbana.” This arrow seemed to offer a glimpse of hope—a pathway out of suffering. Yet the profound knowledge it represented was beyond my understanding. I had a vague familiarity with the concept, but I knew that truly grasping the philosophy and practice of Patissathamupada would be an intricate and challenging endeavour. As life’s obstacles grew and the constraints of samsara—the endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth – became clearer, I resolved to delve deeply into the study of “Patissathamupada Dependent Origination.”
In 2016, I began planning for occasional Vipassana retreats at the Monastery in London. I had the privilege of studying under Chief Ven. Kitsayana, a distinguished teacher of Venerable Mogok Sayadaw Kyi U Wimala’s timeless methods, was inspired by the Buddha’s teachings over 2,600 years ago. His approach, seamlessly integrating theory and Vipassana meditation, garnered widespread acclaim and often attracted hundreds, if not thousands or millions, of practitioners throughout the nation to his retreats. Though his schedule was rigorous, I felt immensely honoured to participate in exclusive mini-retreat groups in London, with just three or four participants, where his invaluable guidance profoundly shaped my understanding.
My journey began with a simple aspiration: to transform my life notes into a structured and cohesive collection, not solely as a personal archive of rare and valuable teachings, but as a gift to share this enduring wisdom with others. I dreamed of turning this humble project into a book, a legacy that would protect and preserve these teachings for those who follow in the years to come. With minimal knowledge and resources, I sought the guidance and blessings of senior monks, who encouraged me to begin gathering rare insights and sacred notes that were seldom seen by the public. The process was painstaking – photocopying, cutting, pasting, and organizing pages while contending with the intricate Pali script, the ancient language of the Buddha’s teachings. Unable to type at the time, I painstakingly relied on handwritten notes, meticulously assembling the pieces with care. My vision was to create a handbook that I could honour and rely on for life, ensuring the teachings were readily accessible whenever I needed them. Little did I know that this mission would evolve into a journey requiring years of dedication and persistence.
With the hope of finalizing my book, I sent my draft notes to a typist for transcription. Yet, the task proved far more difficult than I had anticipated. The typist’s lack of familiarity with the content, combined with my own limited experience and the sheer intricacy of the philosophical material, created hurdles at every turn. Even with the monks offering their time for proofreading, errors and disorganization persisted. On several occasions, draft files were lost entirely, while others became inaccessible due to incompatibility with my computer’s software. This often left me restarting the process from scratch, manually arranging handwritten notes and draft pieces by hand in a painstaking effort to regain order.
Adding to the challenge was my uncertainty about contributing my thoughts to the book. When two senior monks in London graciously assisted me, I brought stacks of draft paper notes to organize the content with their help. Together, we worked meticulously to arrange the notes, piece by piece, until the draft was almost ready to publish. Yet, a wise monk encouraged me, unexpectedly, to write personal insight for each chapter. This suggestion posed an immense challenge, as I felt unprepared to craft meaningful additions without practical experience or expertise, especially knowing the book would be read by scholars and experts across the globe.
The journey toward completing my book taught me that knowledge alone was not enough – I needed to combine it with practical insights gained through meditation and study. This approach was the only way to accomplish what I had set out to achieve. After dedicating years of effort and refining countless drafts, I committed myself fully, knowing there was no turning back. Over three additional years, I immersed myself in intensive research, studying dhamma teachings and applying practices to craft a book that would push my creativity, resilience, and confidence to the limit. For someone who had never written a book before, this felt like the ultimate test.
As monks were absorbed by their daily responsibilities, it became difficult to rely on external help to finalize the book. Undeterred, I took matters into my own hands, teaching myself typing, installing proper fonts by watching YouTube tutorials, and embracing the challenge of starting again from scratch. I combined research with practice, gradually refining the content and narrowing the draft to over 300 pages. With meticulous care, I self-proofread, designed the book’s cover, and oversaw every detail until the book was ready for self-printing in the UK as a gesture of my charitable dedication. I ensured the book was freely accessible, believing its value lay in making these teachings widely available. Transcribing dhamma talks from rare audio recordings into written scripture was a task that tested the limits of dedication and perseverance. With each talk spanning over an hour, I found myself listening more than 70 times to extract and preserve the essence of their timeless wisdom into written scripture.
Years of tireless drafting revealed a fundamental truth: I had to pour my focus into one singular purpose – completing my book. My chronic health challenges demanded an unyielding spirit, pushing me to work twice as hard as others to keep moving forward. Through self-learning and adaptability, I carved out a path, closing myself off from the distractions of the world. For many years, I directed all my efforts into achieving a goal that would become a testament to resilience and perseverance. When I committed to this with unshakable determination, something extraordinary happened. Creative ideas began to flow freely, propelling me toward crafting a book that exceeded my limits. My vision sharpened with each passing day, and I could vividly imagine the moment when I would honourably present this offering to Chief Ven. Kitsayana, the monks, impart their wisdom to the world.
