What inspired you to become an entrepreneur, and what lessons have you learned from your journey?

As I reflect on my journey as an entrepreneur, I can pinpoint several key factors that inspired me to take this path. Being the youngest (by far) of 4 children, where I was constantly being told what to do, probably instilled an early desire for autonomy.  Also, being “a little different” all of my life likely spurred a desire to create an environment that felt like I belonged in. And of course, the innovation was a major driver. I wanted to create environments where I could make decisions aligned with my vision and foster creativity and growth. Additionally, my passion for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and its potential to improve lives, particularly for individuals with autism, played a significant role. I was drawn to its ability to enhance communication and independence, which motivated me to start my first ABA clinic.

Throughout my journey, I’ve learned several valuable lessons. Adaptability and humility have been crucial, as the field of ABA is constantly evolving. Remaining open to new technologies and methodologies has allowed me to continuously improve my approaches. Authenticity in leadership has also been instrumental in attracting and retaining talented team members. People respond well to genuine leadership, which has been a key factor in my success. Furthermore, embracing nonbinary thinking has been essential in creating nuanced solutions for neurodivergent conditions like autism. This understanding led to the development of NonBinary Solutions, where we use AI to provide more personalized and effective care.

My experiences have also highlighted the importance of mentorship and resilience. I’ve seen how mentorship can impact less experienced providers in the ABA field, which is why I aim to create technology that acts as a “digital mentor,” guiding clinicians while preserving their autonomy. Additionally, resilience and risk-taking have been essential in navigating the complexities of building and scaling businesses in the ABA sector. I’ve learned to view setbacks as opportunities for growth, which has been vital in overcoming challenges and achieving success. Overall, my journey has been shaped by a combination of passion, innovation, and a commitment to improving lives through technology and ABA.

As a neurodivergent leader, how has your personal experience shaped your approach to business and advocacy?

As a neurodivergent leader, my personal experience has profoundly shaped my approach to business and advocacy. Neurodivergence brings unique strengths, such as innovative problem-solving and deep focus, which have been invaluable in driving my entrepreneurial ventures forward. For instance, my ability to think differently has allowed me to approach challenges from unconventional angles, often leading to breakthrough solutions in the ABA field. This fresh perspective has been instrumental in creating more personalized and effective care solutions for individuals.

My experiences have also taught me the importance of authenticity and empathy in leadership. As someone who values direct communication and genuine connections, I strive to create a culture where team members feel comfortable expressing themselves without fear of judgment. This approach not only fosters a more collaborative and resilient team but also encourages inclusivity and diversity. By embracing neurodiversity, I aim to champion environments where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives.

In advocacy, my journey has driven me to promote greater understanding and acceptance of neurodivergent leadership. I believe that by embracing neurodiversity, organizations can unlock innovative potential and create more inclusive workplaces. This involves challenging traditional norms and adapting structures to support diverse leadership styles, rather than forcing individuals to conform to outdated models. By advocating for these changes, I hope to pave the way for more neurodivergent leaders to rise and transform the business landscape with their unique strengths and perspectives.

Your talk “#ItsNotBinary” challenges binary thinking. Can you share the core message behind it and why it’s so important in today’s world?

The concept of nonbinary thinking, as discussed in my talk “#ItsNotBinary,” challenges the simplistic binary frameworks that often dominate our understanding of the world. This perspective is crucial in today’s society, where media and social media have significantly contributed to polarizing narratives that are harmful to societal cohesion.

Polarizing Narratives in Media and Social Media

Traditional media and social media platforms have played a significant role in exacerbating polarization by spreading disinformation and amplifying divisive content. Cable news networks often present ideologically biased information, while social media algorithms favor sensational and divisive posts, creating a cycle of outrage and hostility. This environment fosters a sense of “us versus them,” where individuals are categorized into opposing groups, leading to a breakdown in understanding and empathy.

Embracing Nonbinary Thinking for Compassion and Nuance

Embracing nonbinary thinking offers a powerful antidote to these polarizing narratives. By recognizing that experiences and identities exist on a spectrum rather than in binary categories, we can foster a more compassionate and nuanced understanding of individual lived experiences. This approach encourages us to see beyond simplistic categorizations and appreciate the complexity of human experiences. It promotes empathy by acknowledging that everyone has their own unique “data set” of experiences, which cannot be reduced to binary labels.

Nonbinary thinking also helps us understand that many concepts and societal issues are multifaceted and cannot be confined to traditional binary frameworks. By embracing this complexity, we can create a more inclusive and accepting environment where individuals feel valued and respected for who they are, regardless of their identity or background.

Ultimately, adopting a nonbinary perspective allows us to move beyond the divisive narratives perpetuated by media and social media. It encourages us to engage with the world in a more empathetic and nuanced way, recognizing that everyone’s experiences are unique and deserving of respect. This shift in thinking is essential for building a more compassionate and harmonious society.

You’ve been a certified behavior analyst since 2002 and have worked in the field for over 25 years. How has the landscape of ABA evolved during that time?

Whew!  That’s a whole series right there….

Over the past 25 years, I’ve witnessed significant evolution in the landscape of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). When I first entered the field, ABA was primarily focused on behavior modification techniques, often using methods that were more punitive than positive. However, since then, the field has undergone a transformative shift towards more ethical, evidence-based, and compassionate practices.

Early Developments and Challenges
In the early days, ABA was heavily influenced by the work of pioneers like Dr. Ole Ivar Lovaas, who applied behaviorist principles to teach language, social, and adaptive skills to children with autism. While these early interventions showed promise, they sometimes relied on coercive methods that have since been widely criticized for their potential harm.

Evolution Towards Positive and Ethical Practices
One of the most significant advancements in ABA has been the shift towards positive reinforcement and the abandonment of punitive practices. The introduction of Positive Behavior Support (PBS) marked a critical turning point, focusing on environmental modifications and teaching replacement skills to address challenging behaviors. The establishment of professional standards and ethical guidelines further ensured that ABA services adhere to high-quality care.

Technological Advancements and Expansion
In recent years, ABA has leveraged technological advancements to enhance service delivery. Telehealth and mobile applications have made interventions more accessible and efficient, allowing for remote supervision and real-time feedback. This expansion has also led to ABA being applied beyond autism, addressing a broader range of behavioral needs and populations, including developmental disabilities, mental health disorders, and even organizational management.

Emphasis on Individualization and Neurodiversity
Today, ABA emphasizes a more holistic and individualized approach, recognizing the unique needs, preferences, and strengths of each client. This person-centered approach not only improves outcomes but also promotes greater client satisfaction and engagement. The field continues to evolve with a focus on safe, evidence-based interventions that respect neurodiversity and bodily autonomy.

Overall, the evolution of ABA reflects a journey from a more rigid and punitive approach to a compassionate, adaptable, and inclusive practice that prioritizes the well-being and autonomy of individuals.

You’re an internationally recognized speaker. What’s been the most impactful moment or feedback you’ve received from your talks?

As an internationally recognized speaker, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with diverse audiences and receiving meaningful feedback. One of the most impactful moments for me was during a presentation where I discussed the importance of embracing nonbinary thinking and challenging traditional binary frameworks. A member of the audience, who identified as autistic and nonbinary, approached me afterward and shared how my message resonated deeply with them. They expressed gratitude for highlighting the need to move beyond simplistic categorizations and instead celebrate the complexity and diversity of human experiences.

This interaction was particularly impactful because it underscored the power of inclusive language and perspectives in creating a sense of belonging and validation. It reinforced my commitment to using my platform to advocate for neurodiversity and promote a more nuanced understanding of individual experiences.

Feedback from my talks often emphasizes the importance of authenticity and vulnerability in public speaking. Many attendees appreciate the way I weave personal anecdotes and professional insights together, making complex topics more accessible and relatable. This approach not only engages the audience but also fosters a deeper connection, encouraging them to reflect on their own perspectives and biases. Overall, these moments remind me of the profound impact that thoughtful communication can have on individuals and communities.
