What were the key factors that led you from a coma to becoming a world-champion bodybuilding athlete?
My determination to prove that resilience is about more than just surviving; it’s about thriving after adversity, I held a deep conviction that my struggles served a greater purpose, motivating me not only to recover but to prove to myself that it was possible to achieve bigger goals and upgrade our belief systems. The support of a great coach was also a key factor.
How does your personal journey exemplify the power of resilience and determination?
My life is a testament to resilience. Having been kicked out at the age of 12, entering the care system, and becoming a mother at the age of 16, I faced significant challenges. With no family support and low expectations from others, I poured my energy into providing a better life for my child. I pursued a successful tech career, secured our home, and travelled the world. Each challenge reinforced my resolve, and this same resilience carried me through my recovery from a coma and propelled me into the world of competitive bodybuilding despite severe facial scars and personal insecurities.
Can you share some insights into your approach to mindset training and how it differs from conventional methods?
My approach to mindset training is akin to debugging and optimising a computer system. As a project manager with over a decade of experience handling complex problems, I’ve honed my ability to break down intricate issues into manageable solutions. I apply the same principle to mindset training, providing clients with tools to update their mental software and clear out limiting beliefs like bugs from a system.
This unique blend of neuro-linguistic programming, hypnotherapy, and trauma-informed practices allows my clients to confront and radically reconfigure their thought processes, transforming challenges into stepping stones for success. While we sometimes revisit past experiences where many limiting beliefs originate, we do so with the specific goal of addressing these issues at their root, ensuring a permanent upgrade that prevents future problems.
In what ways does your coaching style incorporate your experiences as an athlete and a survivor?
My experiences as an athlete and a survivor deeply influence my coaching. By setting realistic goals, breaking them down, and focusing on achievable milestones, I leverage my understanding of neuroscience and trauma to address subconscious barriers. This method helps my clients not only set but also achieve their goals, mirroring the discipline and determination required in both high-level athletics and personal recovery.
What are some of the unique challenges you faced on your path to success, and how did you overcome them?
Early in my life, my coping strategy was to simply ‘get up and get on with things.’ While this approach helped me navigate immediate challenges, it ultimately led to burnout and a life-threatening coma. Facing these severe consequences forced me to reevaluate and change my approach to handling stress and adversity and making self-care a fundamental priority.
How do you inspire others to embrace their own transformations and find strength in adversity?
I share my personal adversities and triumphs openly, showing others that it’s possible to overcome severe setbacks and achieve greatness. “By demonstrating how each challenge can be a catalyst for growth, I inspire others to see obstacles not as roadblocks but as opportunities to evolve and excel.”
What specific strategies do you employ to help individuals overcome mental barriers and self-limiting beliefs?
I designed my ‘Scars to Strength’ process to comprehensively address mental barriers. This programme combines various techniques, including NLP and hypnotherapy, to help clients manage stress better, reduce overthinking, and adopt a champion’s mindset. This toolkit empowers them to overcome hurdles on their path to personal and professional goals.”
Could you share a memorable moment or lesson you learned from one of your motivational talks or coaching sessions?
One standout moment occurred during a session with a client who had invested thousands of dollars in personal development without addressing her core issues. She made a significant breakthrough using my integrated approach, addressing childhood traumas that had been plaguing her for over 40 years. Her public acknowledgement of this transformation not only highlighted the effectiveness of my methods, but also the profound impact of addressing deep-seated emotional wounds.
How do you cultivate a supportive and empowering environment for your clients and students?
I create a pressure-free environment where clients feel safe to express their vulnerabilities without judgment. By focusing on uncovering and addressing the parts of themselves that hold them back, I equip them with the tools for transformative change, ensuring they feel supported and understood throughout their journey.
In what ways does your story serve as a universal message of hope and empowerment for people facing challenges in their own lives?
My story is one of overcoming immense personal and societal challenges without familial support or resources. It serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment, illustrating that success is attainable no matter the obstacles. This message encourages others to pursue their aspirations relentlessly, irrespective of their circumstances.
