Silva Lila: From the Newsroom to the Boardroom

With a microphone in one hand and a vision in the other, Silva Lila has always had a voice that commands attention—and a purpose that drives impact. A former journalist turned powerhouse health executive, Silva brings a rare blend of storytelling, strategy, and sharp business acumen to every role she steps into. Now based in Michigan, this MBA trailblazer equipped with Ivy League executive education serves as a dedicated Chief Operating Officer, known for her unwavering integrity, operational excellence, and passion for empowering women. Her mantra is simple yet powerful: “Behind every successful woman is herself.” And through her leadership, she’s proving that when women support each other, success becomes unstoppable.

What inspired your transition from journalism to becoming a health executive?

Becoming a mother plays a significant role in this transition. It’s essential to note that, although I transitioned industries, I have not abandoned my passion for journalism or the skills I developed in that field. I have integrated these abilities into the business realm, utilizing them when negotiating corporate contracts, implementing strategic ideas, and engaging in professional communication. This includes reading the room and understanding diverse individuals with varying backgrounds, cultures, positions, and roles, as well as investigating and collecting data, always thinking outside the box. In essence, I have effectively merged my love of journalism and business with my dedication to healthy living and leadership, creating a unique, cohesive identity that encompasses all these aspects.

As someone who has led operational teams for over a decade, what does leadership mean to you today?

Being a leader is about more than just a title or position. It is about the way we interact with and influence others. We need to lead by demonstrating integrity, empathy, and a strong work ethic. Embracing different perspectives fosters innovation and creativity. To me, being a leader is about earning respect and trust in others through my actions and behaviors. It is about empowering and supporting my team to achieve their goals and fostering a positive and inclusive work environment. Ultimately, it is on how I choose to lead; it involves my ability to inspire others to achieve their full potential. Being a leader is often it gets confused with the “boss” title. These are not the same, actually very far from it. In contrast, a boss may simply give orders and expect them to be followed without question. A fair leadership approach encourages open dialogue, enabling team members to express their ideas and concerns without fear of judgment. A successful leader understands how to navigate the strengths and weaknesses of each individual, fostering an environment where everyone can thrive. It is not about “me” shining, it is about the whole team thriving, which can translate into business growth and an increase in market share.

You mentioned your love for the microphone and writing—do those passions still play a role in your life?

From an early age, I have nurtured a deep passion for both the microphone and writing. These interests have played a significant role in shaping my life. As a former journalist and producer, I truly value the experiences I gained while collaborating with individuals from diverse backgrounds and industries. I believe in the importance of ensuring that every voice is heard and represented. Communication can create an impact in numerous ways, whether through casual conversations, intimate discussions, or strategic planning. Currently, (in very early stages ), I am dedicated to two writing projects, both of which I am pursuing simultaneously.

What does your motto, “Behind every successful woman is herself”, mean to you personally?

We can redefine our narrative and reshape our future. Embracing our individuality means recognizing our strengths and acknowledging our weaknesses. It’s about cultivating self-awareness and understanding that our journey is unique, it is mine and doesn’t need to mirror something that I don’t own. Yes, I agree that surrounding yourself with a supportive network amplifies your potential, but it is essential to remember that we/you/I are the catalyst for the change that resides within us. Every challenge serves as a steppingstone toward growth. When we all approach obstacles with a positive mindset, I personally not only enhance my resilience but also inspire everyone around us, coworkers, children, friends, etc.  Our perspective can shift the dynamics of any situation, transforming setbacks into opportunities for learning and development.

Moreover, the power of self-belief cannot be overstated. We need to trust our abilities to remain open to new experiences. I truly believe that by investing time in personal growth—whether through education, skill-building, or self-reflection- we equip ourselves to navigate the complexities of life and work with confidence.
Ultimately, everyone’s success reflects our own choices. I refuse to think that I am just a participant in my life. I am the architect of my destiny. I decide how proactive I can be, how to embrace discomfort, how to get out of it and how to improve.

How do you support and empower women in your current role or your community?

Supporting and empowering women does not imply that one undervalues the contributions of men. As human beings, we should prioritize supporting what is right, regardless of gender.  My commitment to uplifting women is a daily practice that doesn’t require grand gestures or public acknowledgement; it is deeply embedded in my values and upbringing. This support is a legacy passed down by my mother and grandmother, who have stood by me in every decision I’ve made throughout my life. I continue this tradition by offering encouragement to my colleagues, friends, and children. My daughter often expresses appreciation for my candid honesty, which is indeed a hallmark of my support. I believe in providing straightforward feedback while also equipping others with the tools they need to navigate challenges and discover the paths that are right for them. This mentorship is invaluable. I practice it consistently with my friends and coworkers, backing up the women in my community and championing their entrepreneurial endeavors. I believe that being present, offering a listening ear, and serving as a mentor and coach are irreplaceable roles that carry immense significance to us all.

What challenges have you faced in male-dominated industries, and how did you overcome them?

Early in my career, I received a comment that was meant as a compliment. It made me think more about it: “You’re not just pretty; you’re smart too.” While the intention was positive, it implied that women, including myself, must prove our worth to be seen as equal to our peers. This notion did not resonate well with me, as I do not consider myself inferior.

However, I learned the importance of letting go of such sentiments. The focus should be on personal growth and expanding one’s knowledge. While knowledge is undeniably powerful, the ability to apply that knowledge is equally important. I am a firm believer that striving to become indispensable in a world where everyone is replaceable involves positioning yourself as an asset. To navigate in a cut-throat business environment, the key lies in hard work, both diligent and strategic. It is essential to gain the respect and recognition that your contributions deserve. Once this respect is established, you transcend being viewed merely as a participant; you become an invaluable asset!!

Can you share a moment in your career that truly tested your integrity or professionalism, and how you handled it?

The workplace should not resemble a battleground characterized by bullying or hostility. Instead, it should foster an environment that encourages positive energy and recognizes the contributions of all individuals. It’s essential to acknowledge that a challenging atmosphere or a harsh culture (often labelled incorrectly as rough day behaviour) stems from disrespect, which should never be overlooked. Everyone’s efforts deserve recognition and support to cultivate a more uplifting and respectful workplace.

Respect and trust are very important to me, and being exposed to it, that is where I had to speak up. I must emphasize that it doesn’t matter what position you hold, whether you’re in a senior role or starting at entry-level. The higher you go, the more you must put yourself on both sides of the table. Everyone should be respected, regardless of their seniority, title, or position.  A lot of growth and work performance doesn’t show up immediately on P&L financial statements; however, without nurturing the human aspect of the business, nothing can survive. But let’s face it, this notion is ignored most of the time. We get so blinded by valuing individuals that we think their performance translates into numbers, neglecting the support team that they cannot survive without. This oversight can create an unproductive environment with teamwork undervalued. Nothing good comes out of it. Employees feel isolated, leading to decreased morale and productivity. It is fair to say that in reality, every role within the company contributes to the whole, and it’s the synergy surrounding all that drives sustainable success. This is a sustainable advantage for the company!! When individuals feel valued and respected, they are more likely to contribute their best work and collaborate effectively. Employee morale, engagement, and a sense of belonging are critical components that drive performance and innovation.  In conclusion, cultivating a respectful and positive workplace is not just a moral obligation; it is a strategic necessity for any organization aiming for long-term success. Let’s not forget people are the company’s best assets and ROI.

How has your Ivy League executive education shaped your perspective on leadership and growth?

At the executive program at the University of Pennsylvania, we were all executives coming from different backgrounds, cultures and mindsets from different grad schools. The brainstorming on different topics was fascinating. In this diverse setting, I’ve witnessed firsthand how collaboration between individuals from different cultures and disciplines leads to richer solutions and more successful outcomes. My academic background shaped my perspective on growth and leadership by utilizing different approaches, not a one-size-fits-all approach. I have the honor to work firsthand with a very diverse group in my current job as well. It’s a continuous learning journey, where adaptability and empathy become key traits in navigating the complexities of diverse interactions. Ultimately, the goal is to create a cohesive unit that thrives on mutual respect and shared values, driving the organization forward together.

What advice would you give to women who want to lead but feel overwhelmed or unsure where to start?

My initial advice will be that we should not let feelings of overwhelm or uncertainty hinder our progress; approach your journey one day at a time. Avoid getting lost in the enormity of your ultimate goal. Instead, establish achievable milestones along the way to help you reach that overarching objective. As I frequently tell my daughter, you have the strength to overcome challenges. You possess the intelligence to recognize the importance of making necessary changes, along with resilience and determination to see them through. Dance through the rain with pure elegance : )

For example, if you look at the successful people that we know, public figures or in our circle, their achievements are rarely just the result of luck. Rather, they are often the outcome of persistence—those who dared to try again and again after experiencing numerous failures. Setbacks and disappointments ( we all had our shares) are integral to the learning process, ultimately making you more robust and equipping you to tackle life’s various challenges, whether it is at a personal or professional level. It is this very struggle that builds your strength and leads you to the next chapter of your journey, bringing you closer to your ultimate goals. Always set goals for yourself; never settle for less. You deserve far more than what life may occasionally offer. Life can be unpredictable, but you can position yourself to overcome any obstacle that comes your way.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind through your work and advocacy?

Our time on this planet is finite, and although it may be uncomfortable to acknowledge, it does come with an expiration date. Throughout my life, I strive diligently to leave behind a legacy—a memory of someone who was respected, loving, caring, and fearless, someone who made a footprint on everyone’s life around her. However, the narrative of our lives, whether mine or yours, is still unfolding. So, we should sharpen our pencils and begin crafting those chapters. : )
