3 Lessons I Learned from Businesswomen in Bali

By Mirela Sula

Walking through the streets of Ubud, Bali, I found myself wandering into small local shops. Something struck me immediately: every single one of them was run by a woman.

It was more than just a coincidence, it was a powerful reminder. As I browsed and spoke with them, I was transported back to my early 20s, when I had my own little shop in my hometown. I can still picture myself sitting on a stool, waiting for customers, hoping each sale would be enough to keep the lights on. I remember the long hours, the exhaustion, and even working while pregnant and not feeling well, because I simply couldn’t afford not to.

Seeing these women, determined and full of quiet strength, reminded me of three lessons that still hold true today.

1. Never Forget Where You’re Coming From

Standing in those shops reminded me of my own beginnings, humble, uncertain, yet driven by a deep determination to create something for myself and my family. It’s easy, once you’ve moved forward in life, to forget the struggles that shaped you. But those moments are our foundation. They remind us not only of how far we’ve come but also of the resilience we’ve built along the way. Gratitude grows when you look back and acknowledge your journey. And with gratitude comes humility, an essential quality no matter how successful you become.

2. Know Your Worth and Don’t Be Afraid to Sell

At one shop, a woman quoted me 1.5M (not pounds, don’t worry). My boys quickly chimed in: “That’s so much! You could have found it cheaper elsewhere.” But instead of bargaining her down, I paid with joy, respect, and a smile. Why? Because what I really admired was her courage to name her price unapologetically. She knew her worth. She believed in the value of her work. She wasn’t shy about selling, negotiating, or asking.

Too often, especially as women, we hesitate when it comes to valuing ourselves. We discount our skills, undercharge, or apologize for asking. But these women showed me that selling is not shameful, it’s a declaration of confidence. When you know your worth, others learn to respect it.

3. Always Invest in Women

Here’s the truth: maybe I could have bought the same item somewhere else for less. But that’s not the point.

When you choose to invest in women, you’re doing more than buying a product. You’re supporting families. You’re fueling dreams. You’re keeping traditions alive. You’re reminding another woman that her work matters. And when you give with joy without resentment or second-guessing you’re planting a seed of blessing that always finds its way back to you.

It’s not about what you lose; it’s about what you give. And giving with love multiplies in ways you can’t always see.

I left thinking all way back

The women of Bali didn’t just sell me souvenirs. They gifted me with perspective. They reminded me of resilience, the power of self-worth, and the importance of supporting one another. So the next time you encounter a woman selling her craft, her art, her product, or her services, pause. See her not just as a vendor, but as a reflection of possibility.

And remember: when you invest in women, you’re investing in a future where we all rise together.
