Why Energy Management Is the New Success Strategy for Women Leaders
By Constanze van Ginneken
Success is not just about the perfect strategy – it’s also about the energy and presence you bring to it. We plan, structure, optimize – often to the point of exhaustion. But what truly creates impact is the energy you radiate when you’re centered. People follow people – not because of their performance, but because of their presence.
The big mistake: Success = performance
Many women – and I was one of them – believe: if I just work harder, longer, faster… then I’ll be successful. I used to think I mattered more when I was the last to leave the office, proud of my 60–80 hour weeks. But is that really true?
That mindset brought me to the edge of burnout 20 years ago as a corporate leader. And I lost the most important thing along the way: the joy in my work.
That’s when I pulled the emergency brake, changed direction – and eventually chose to become an entrepreneur.
Today, I know: Success doesn’t come from constant performance. It comes from energy and radiance. And that, in turn, comes not from doing more, but from conscious regeneration.
What regeneration really means
Many confuse regeneration with laziness – or think a little sleep and some yoga on the weekend will do the trick.
But true regeneration goes deeper. It’s about energy management on every level:
- Physical (sleep, movement, nutrition)
- Mental (thought hygiene, breaks)
- Emotional (boundaries, feelings, connection)
- Hormonal (cycle, stress balance, nervous system)
- Spiritual (stillness, nature, connection)
This isn’t esoteric. It’s self-leadership. And I’ll be honest with you: it didn’t happen overnight for me either. I’ve been working on things like quality sleep for years, and I’m still not where I want to be.
It’s important to discover what works for you – how you can regenerate in everyday life, not just on vacation. Start managing your energy daily. With small routines that fit into your life.
How’s your energy? – Here is your personal regeneration check
Answer spontaneously – how many of these apply to you?
- I wake up feeling rested and clear in my mind.
- I schedule intentional recovery times – even on busy days.
- I take mini breaks daily – without a screen, without scrolling.
- I recognize early signs of energy loss – and act accordingly.
- I say no when my body or nervous system signals ‘stop’.
- I have rituals that bring me back into balance (movement, breath, me-time).
- I know what truly gives me energy – and I do it regularly.
- I stand up every hour and move my body briefly.
- I spend at least 30 minutes a day in nature.
3 or more No? Then it’s time to give yourself permission to return to your strength. Not someday – but now.
You owe that to yourself and your body. Because when you care for yourself, you care for your business, your relationships – and your life.
Regeneration is not a luxury. It’s your responsibility. Especially as a woman who leads – and leads by example.
Don’t forget this
Energy is your foundation – for success today and for health tomorrow. I’ve seen too many people push themselves all their lives, only to arrive at retirement burned out and sick.
Neglecting yourself has a price. Not always right away – but eventually. You’re not here to burn out. You’re here to shine – with presence, strength and joy. Now – and in 10, 20, or 30 years.
Regeneration is not stagnation. It’s an investment. In yourself. In your future. In a life you’ll still want to celebrate at 70 and beyond.
- What will you do today to stay strong tomorrow?
- When will you give yourself permission to recharge?
- What daily micro-regeneration will you start tomorrow?
